Swimming pools can be the source of many diseases and injuries, such as Giardia, Cryptosporidium and E. coli as well as slips, falls and accidental entrapment. Proper pool construction and operation are important to ensure swimming in a public pool is safe.

Public swimming pools, spas, wading, training and therapy pools must comply with North Carolina Laws and Rules. They must also comply with the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act.

Residential pools are not permitted or inspected by Environmental Health.
