Union County Veterans Services Honors Wounded Heroes Day

Post Date:04/23/2024 9:51 AM

Wounded Heroes DayWednesday, April 24, 2024, marks the fourth annual observance of Wounded Heroes Day, which honors the resilience and sacrifice of North Carolina veterans.

The day pays tribute to Sgt. Michael Verardo, a local hero who suffered severe injuries from an improvised explosive device explosion in Afghanistan on April 24, 2010. After years of physical, occupational, speech and therapies, he underwent his 120th surgery on April 24, 2019, his ninth "Alive Day."

In 2021, the State of North Carolina officially recognized Wounded Heroes Day through the passing of House Bill 138/Senate Bill 132, underscoring the state's commitment to honoring the men and women who have bravely served the country.

On Sunday, April 21, 2024, the Independence Fund, a Charlotte-based organization dedicated to helping and advocating for veterans who have been injured or are sick, hosted a Wounded Heroes Day ceremony and invited Union County Veterans Services Director Michelle Marcano and Veterans Services Officer Robert Turner to provide valuable resources to attendees. The event not only commemorated the bravery of Sgt. Verardo, but also celebrated the unwavering spirit of all wounded, injured and ill veterans.

"Wounded Heroes Day is a time for us to reflect on the profound sacrifices made by our servicemen and women," said Marcano. "It’s about recognizing their courage, their fight, and their unwavering determination to overcome unimaginable challenges."

The Independence Fund continues to work alongside state agencies to provide necessary support and resources to veterans adjusting back to civilian life. Their efforts ensure that the heroes who return home with battle scars receive the recognition and support they deserve.
